Dangers And
Hazards Of Pack Riding
Many of you have heard the
old saying " A good ride is one that you walk away
from."
At American Legion Riders of
Alabama, we want
to take that saying one step further. We want every
bodies ride to be good ride and in order to assure
that our rides are safe ones, we all need to follow
strict guidelines and educate ourselves and others when riding in a pack.
Many of you have seen a
group of riders flying down the highway at 80 MPH
wheel to wheel and handle bars almost touching. This
type of riding comes from years of riding together as
a group, and each member knowing what his brother is
going to do as well as he knows his own actions. This
is not recommended for all riders and if you are
uncomfortable with this type riding you should make
the Road Captain aware of your riding comfort.
Not all would be able to
ride in such a formation, because of the many
different levels of experience and riding skills. When
riding in a group of people you do not know, a group such as
that has too many different riders for everyone
to know other riders actions before he or she does them,
therefore; the next best thing is for everyone to promote
safety, implement policies and procedures, and
establish a ride program where each member does the
same thing, the same way, each time, on each ride.
Group riding can be one of
the most dangerous things a bike rider can do. It only
takes a split second for a fellow rider to make a
little mistake and have that little mistake turn into
a major catastrophe taking out several riders of the
group.
It is for safety sake that
we have developed these pages to help guide riders in
having safe rides. As long as our riders are fully trained
or educated in group riding, knows
exactly what to do, and does it consistently each
time, we can be reasonably sure we will walk away from
our rides.
American Legion Riders of
Alabama, wants all
riders to ride safe, have fun, and enjoy being
a motorcyclist. By being trained,
staying alert, and paying attention to your
surroundings, you will enjoy many hours of
camaraderie, and riding fun, while pursuing a passion
we love, the biking world,
and charitable undertakings.
"So mount up and lets
ride free through this great country of ours"
